Like I said... Don't ask.
Title. Er…. It started as a quadrupedal insectile humanoid-ish thing with 4 arms instead of 4 legs. Then I realised his arms were buff and thought “LOL. Nude alien guy”. Unfortunately, my creativity doesn’t stretch as far as alien penis, so… ack, I have no idea where this is going. Just… alien guy thing.
Also, I’m in love with Painter’s digital watercolor brushes. Obvious mirror cut+paste is obvious (too lazy to draw two halves, sorry!). Also, no, I don’t take drugs.

Om nom nom
Had a play with sketching tonight. I suck at it. HA. I wish I’d taken the time to learn how to draw when I was younger, because now I’m just going to have to struggle through it while I work around people who are amaaaaazing illustrators. This little four-eyed alien dinosaur thingy took a long time, and many iterations and revisions, to get to where it is. The proportions are all gumbi, but I can live with it for now.

Some spotty fungi.
Another play with Painter, this time trying to use the blender to get good gradients. I’m loving this program.

A tree that looks decidedly unmarshmallowlike.
Spent some more time with Painter. Gotta say, I love the feel of the brushes. I haven’t explored more than the Oil Pastels and Watery Blender, but they feel very coarse and messy, and it’s a fun way to paint – forces me to be more relaxed, where every time I attempt to learn this painting thing, I focus on details and skew the whole image as a result. I’m enjoying exploring this picture-book style, too. It’s towards the direction I’d like to take my game, so I’ll probably keep playing along these lines.

Clouds. Marshmallows. SAME THING.
“The sky went on forever…”
10 points if you get the reference. Otherwise, here’s a painting exercise. Had a play with Corel Painter X for the first time, and this is the result. Two brushes used: the Oil Pastel brush, and the Blender. It was fun. It looks more like a tumorous marshmallow than a cloud, but it’s a start!

Alien nuke FTW
A new pixel art test, this time using 9 colours (including backgound and text) and about an hour of my time while waiting for renders. It started as some weird alien rocks, but I kept seeing a mushroom in it, so that’s where it went. This is also the first time I’ve tried anti-aliasing linework. Also, I like mushrooms. That’s all.

5 minute speed painting
Ack. I promised to post everything. ACK.

15 minute speed paint
Another speed paint. 11 colours including background. The palette isn’t as bold in this one, and it suffers for it. I’m still working by laying down the outline in solid greys and then pushing hue/saturation before painting details. I’d like to try a predefined palette but I enjoy working with a more fluid, interactive colour script.

15 minute speed paint
A quick, 15 minute speed pixel paint of a dead tree. I used a similar hue-shifted palette as the previous isometric tile test. I like painting trees. 7 colours total, including background, and two lonely black pixels.
Also, I have a graphics tablet. I should use it. Painting with the mouse is annoying.

Isometric hurts my brain
I had a play with some isometric tiles tonight. I’m less than impressed with my efforts, but true to my promise I’m posting the results. I chose a fairly muted palette to go with the always-rainy-and-gloomy theme for a game idea I’m toying with (more on that later). I need to take a look at some good isometric titles for inspiration, as this was just thrown down in 20 minutes without any reference. Not even sure what I was going for… kind of a damp, dead earth feel (but with a stylised palette). I deliberately left a gap between the tiles for this post so the individual tiles are visible.
