(int)elligence (float)ing Out of My Head

March 31st, 2009 by Boon

I’ve been struggling to figure out a problem with my code. For some reason, my partitioning system wasn’t working. On paper, it was perfect. Unfortunately, my PC can’t read my handwriting and refused to believe me. I had a feeling I knew roughly where the problem was – buried deep within a huge chunk of horrifying arithmetic that I must have written in the midst of a siezure, because everytime I look at it I go completely blank and wake up lying on the couch sobbing into a coffee mug.

Quadtrees and Culling and ShootMeInTheFace, OH MY!

March 30th, 2009 by Boon

I decided to implement some form of culling to my engine, for the sake of performance. I don’t need it yet, so technically this would fall under premature optimisation, but I know I’m going to have to cull collision data at least, so I didn’t think it could hurt.

Alien nuke FTW

Alien nuke FTW

A new pixel art test, this time using 9 colours (including backgound and text) and about an hour of my time while waiting for renders. It started as some weird alien rocks, but I kept seeing a mushroom in it, so that’s where it went. This is also the first time I’ve tried anti-aliasing linework. Also, I like mushrooms. That’s all.

5 minute speed painting

Ack. I promised to post everything. ACK.

15 minute speed paint

15 minute speed paint

Another speed paint. 11 colours including background. The palette isn’t as bold in this one, and it suffers for it. I’m still working by laying down the outline in solid greys and then pushing hue/saturation before painting details. I’d like to try a predefined palette but I enjoy working with a more fluid, interactive colour script.

15 Minute Speed Painting

15 minute speed paint

A quick, 15 minute speed pixel paint of a dead tree. I used a similar hue-shifted palette as the previous isometric tile test. I like painting trees. 7 colours total, including background, and two lonely black pixels.

Also, I have a graphics tablet. I should use it. Painting with the mouse is annoying.

Isometric Is Hard

Isometric hurts my brain

Isometric hurts my brain

I had a play with some isometric tiles tonight. I’m less than impressed with my efforts, but true to my promise I’m posting the results. I chose a fairly muted palette to go with the always-rainy-and-gloomy theme for a game idea I’m toying with (more on that later). I need to take a look at some good isometric titles for inspiration, as this was just thrown down in 20 minutes without any reference. Not even sure what I was going for… kind of a damp, dead earth feel (but with a stylised palette). I deliberately left a gap between the tiles for this post so the individual tiles are visible.

MoooOOOOORE Pixels!!!

Grass to dirt transition set

Grass to dirt transition set - CLICK TO ENLARGE

I completed the grass to dirt transition set – my first tile set! There’s a couple of border-matching issues (minor) and a few obvious repetitious elements (annoying) but I’ll fix those later. There’s a lot of transitions to cover, which will exponentialsplode in my face if I don’t impose some limitations on what tiles can overlap what surfaces.

PixelArt

It's some pixels!!!

It's some pixels!!!

I started doing some pixel art, looking to some old-school classics like Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy for inspiration. This is my first attempt at doing some nice pixel art tiles, so be kind! I thought I’d find the process of creating pixel art frustrating, but instead it’s surprisingly therapeutic.

Retro Chic

March 20th, 2009 by Boon

I decided to run with the whole 90’s chic that I accidently hit upon with the “boon” logo, and pushed it further tonight. Whippyx pointed out that the site looks like it belongs to some dark, expensive cocktail lounge where people sip overpriced drinks and browse magazines about overpriced watches. Not what I was going for, but it’s good enough for me HAHA! So that’s my creative bit for today. I’ll see if I can push it a bit further tomorrow.
